Deodorization
Trying to remove unwanted odors is frustrating to almost every property manager. Realtors run into smoke and urine odors frequently. Sometimes cooking odors, like curry or fish can leave a pervasive smell that lingers for years. Animal dander is a common problem too. Over the last 20 some years, as you can imagine, we have seen it all.
Every odor is carried by moisture. That’s why in very cold environments, there are no smells. Since the tar from smoking stays sticky for a very long time, the smell lingers. All of these offensive aromas can be removed. The severity of the problem helps determine what lengths are necessary to extinguish the malodor. Some problems, like the stench left over after a protein fire, are very difficult to eliminate and many steps are needed to restore to a normal condition.
To receive information with regard to your problem, please call us. Below are some helpful tips.
- Put it outside in the sun light. The oxidation created by the suns natural UV light will get rid of all odors!!!
- Clean it. Dander and other smells that come from oils need to be cleaned with degreasers.
- Ozone it. Ozone will get rid of any mild smell.
To get rid of urine smells is more complicated, for small problems, this should work:
Get a product called Nature’s Miracle at your local pet supplier and follow the instructions, if the offensive spot is new. Then, get all the urine you can out of the carpet and padding. You may want to jump on towels or rags to accomplish this.
If the urine spot is over 8 hours old, do the following: mix 1 tsp. to 1 tbs. of white wine vinegar in a cup of water, and blot liberally into the affected area, and then apply the Nature’s Miracle. Over the next 2 weeks, the urine should be gone. You can repeat this if necessary. Do not perform this technique if you have hard wood flooring under your carpet – call us.
Feces or vomit – Use rubbing alcohol on a cotton cloth, remove, blot, and re-apply clean, alcohol treated sections of your rag until no more transfers. This step should remove most of the spot and also helps sanitize the area. Next, mix a paste out of Arm and Hammer baking soda and blot liberally into the spot and leave it to dry. This step will neutralize the acidity of vomit or the alkalinity of feces and stop further color etching into the fiber. It will also help sanitize and remove malodors. When it is dry, you will see some of the pigments from the staining actually drawn up into the dried past. Break up the dried baking soda with the dull side of a knife and vacuum. If there is any stain left, call us.
